How to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats Before Switching Phones
Few things sting quite like setting up a shiny new phone and realising years of WhatsApp chats have vanished. Family group threads, photos from friends, addresses and voice notes sent in a hurry: all of it lives inside WhatsApp, and it does not move itself. A proper backup takes a few minutes and saves you from a very bad day, so do it before you hand the old phone over or wipe it.
The good news is that WhatsApp makes this easy once you know where the switches are. On iPhone, chats back up to iCloud. On Android, they back up to Google Drive. In both cases the trick is the same: check the backup, run a fresh one on Wi-Fi, and only then switch phones and restore.
Step 1: Check what you are backing up
Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup. This screen tells you the important facts: when your last backup ran, how large it is, and which account it uses.
On iPhone, the backup goes to the iCloud account signed in on the phone. On Android, it goes to the Google account you pick in WhatsApp. If the account shown is an old one you no longer use, change it now, because a backup saved to the wrong account is no use to you on the new phone.
The same screen lets you choose whether videos are included. Videos make backups much larger and slower, so think about what matters. If your chats are full of video clips you want to keep, include them and run the backup on Wi-Fi. If you only care about messages and photos, leaving videos out keeps things quick. Either way, make a deliberate choice rather than accepting the default without looking.
Step 2: Run a fresh backup on Wi-Fi
Do not rely on a backup from three months ago. Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to finish while the phone is on Wi-Fi and plugged into power. Large backups can take a while, especially the first time, so give it time and do not close WhatsApp mid-way.
When it finishes, check the date and time shown on the Chat Backup screen. It should show today, with a size that looks sensible for your chat history. If it failed, WhatsApp usually shows an error or an old date, and the most common causes are low cloud storage, a weak connection, or being signed out of iCloud or Google Drive. Fix the cause and run it again.
One more check matters on Android. WhatsApp offers an end-to-end encrypted backup option, protected by a password or a 64-digit key. If you switch this on, keep that password or key somewhere safe, outside WhatsApp. Without it, the backup cannot be restored, even by WhatsApp itself. If you do not want that risk, leave the standard backup switched on and rely on your Google account security instead.
Step 3: Move your number and restore on the new phone
On the new phone, install WhatsApp and sign in with the same phone number, on the same platform where possible. Moving from iPhone to iPhone or Android to Android is straightforward: WhatsApp will find the iCloud or Google Drive backup and offer to restore it during setup. Tap Restore and wait. Do not skip this step thinking you can do it later, because the restore prompt only appears during the first setup.
Moving between iPhone and Android is trickier. WhatsApp now supports transferring chats directly between the two platforms, but the steps depend on the phones involved, and in most recent versions you start the transfer from the old phone during setup of the new one, with both phones nearby and connected. If you are switching platforms, start the official transfer before wiping the old phone, and keep the old phone charged and nearby until the new phone shows your chats.
After the restore, open a few important chats and check that messages and photos are there. Check a group chat, a chat with lots of media, and one old thread. If something looks missing, do not wipe the old phone yet. You still have a chance to re-run the backup and restore again while the old device is intact.
Step 4: Keep a second copy of what matters most
A cloud backup is your safety net, but it is worth keeping a second copy of the things you would hate to lose. Photos and videos from WhatsApp can be saved to your phone gallery, and from there to Google Photos, iCloud Photos or a computer. For truly important chats, WhatsApp lets you export a single chat, with or without media, from inside that chat's settings. Export the handful of threads that matter most and store them somewhere safe.
Also, before you sell or trade in the old phone, sign out of WhatsApp on it only after the new phone is fully set up and checked. Then factory reset the old phone, which removes your data from the device itself. Doing the reset in the wrong order is how chats get lost: wiped old phone, unrestored new phone, no way back.
A quick checklist before you switch
Switching phones should feel exciting, not stressful. A ten-minute backup is the difference between the two.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WhatsApp back up my chats automatically?
WhatsApp can back up automatically on a schedule you choose in Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, but the schedule only helps if it has actually run recently. Before switching phones, always run a manual backup and check the date it shows.
Can I restore an iPhone WhatsApp backup on an Android phone?
Direct restore between iCloud and Google Drive backups does not work, because each platform uses its own cloud service. WhatsApp supports a chat transfer between iPhone and Android during setup of the new phone, so start that transfer before wiping the old phone.
What happens if I skip the restore during setup?
The restore prompt appears during the first setup of WhatsApp on the new phone. If you skip it, you will need to reinstall WhatsApp and set it up again to be offered the restore, and you should do that before the old phone is wiped.
